Online Tutoring for Rural School Children
The programme addresses the top two chronic challenges hampering the Quality of Education in the schools in rural parts of our country – Teacher Shortage and Teaching Quality. The focus is on the children in the age group of 10-14 (6th to 8th grade). Trained and passionate volunteer teachers deliver interactive sessions through Skype in vernacular medium to the children of remote villages. State curriculum is followed in the programme. The teachers will be based anywhere in the world. The children attend the sessions in a digital classroom set up with broad band connectivity. The programme was piloted in four primary schools of four villages in Dharwad block (viz. Managundi, Baad, Nigadi and Benakatti). The children learn English, Mathematics and Science through the programme.
The programme was successful in arousing interest in the three subjects among the children. The children enjoyed learning the three subjects which are usually deemed hard to digest. The children have performed better in all the three subjects, which meant that the children could get rid of the phobia for the subjects. The children also enjoyed the use of technology by which virtual sessions are conducted.
